Fire Department Shares Tips for Safe Fourth of July Celebrations
Chief Ed Warren and the East Kingston Fire Department wish to share several important safety tips and reminders as residents prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.
In New Hampshire, state law allows those age 21 and older to purchase, possess and use consumer fireworks on their private property. East Kingston allows personal use of fireworks with a permit.
Residents are encouraged to report any misuse of fireworks they notice in the community to the East Kingston Police Department at 603-642-5427. In case of a fireworks-related or other emergency, always dial 911.
Chief Warren and Department share the following safety tips with residents:
Celebrate Safely
- Attend organized and permitted fireworks displays only.
- Remember, alcohol/drugs and fireworks do not mix.
- Never allow young children to go near fireworks.
- Keep pets indoors and away from fireworks. The loud noises and flashing lights can be frightening and overwhelming for pets. Pets can become frightened and run from familiar environments and people, becoming lost. Read more here.
Boat Safely
- Always wear a life jacket when on the water. Make sure the jacket is a proper fit for your size and weight and that it is properly fastened. The U.S. Coast Guard reports that there were 636 boating fatalities nationwide in 2022. Alcohol contributed to 88 deaths, or 16 percent of total fatalities.
- Maintain awareness of your surroundings at all times.
- Be courteous and respectful to other boaters.
- Travel at a safe speed for the environment and conditions.
- Be sure you have and know how to use essential equipment, such as visual distress signals, sound producing devices, locator devices, fire extinguishers and navigation lights.
- Check the latest forecast before leaving shore and watch for changing weather.
- Take a safe boating course and get a vessel safety check.
- Never boat under the influence. Drugs and alcohol impact your cognitive abilities, judgment, balance, coordination, reaction time and vision. Federal law prohibits boating under the influence of alcohol and drugs on all boats.

East Kingston Fire Department Responds to Crash Into Utility Pole
Chief Ed Warren reports that the East Kingston Fire Department responded to a crash in the same location as one in that occurred last week.
On Saturday, June 24, at approximately 12:54 a.m., East Kingston firefighters received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle crash involving a utility pole on East Road in the area of the Apple Hill Golf Course.
Companies responded to find a car has crashed into a utility pole, snapping it. The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
On June 17, another vehicle crashed into a utility pole in the same location. In that instance, two off-duty firefighters teamed up to pull the driver from a vehicle moments before it became engulfed in flames.
On Saturday, East Road was closed in the area until about 12:50 p.m. so that the utility pole could be replaced once again.
East Kingston Fire and East Kingston Police were assisted at the scene by the Kingston Fire Department, the Kingston Police Department, and the Kensington Police Department.
Media Comes to East Kingston to Cover Firefighters’ Life-Saving Response
Members of the media came to the station this morning to interview East Kingston Firefighter Robert Bishop and Chelmsford, Mass., Firefighter Josh Abbott about their off-duty response to a serious crash on Saturday afternoon.
“These guys risked it all for somebody that they didn’t know, and the results speak for themselves,” Chief Warren said.
Here is the Channel 7 coverage.
The Sun of Lowell, Mass., which covers Chelmsford, also reported the story.
Chief Warren presented Firefighter Abbott with an t-shirt and pink sunglasses to make him an honorary EKFD member.
Two Off-Duty Firefighters Pull Woman From Burning Car Moments Before Explosion in East Kingston
EAST KINGSTON – Chief Ed Warren reports that an off-duty East Kingston firefighter and an off-duty firefighter from another community pulled a woman from a burning car following a serious crash Saturday afternoon.
At 3:29 p.m., East Kingston first responders were dispatched to a report of a serious crash on East Road near the Apple Hill Golf Course. Upon arrival, East Kingston firefighters learned that off-duty East Kingston Firefighter Robert Bishop, who had been driving home at the time, had nearly been struck head-on by a Dodge Challenger.
After the near-miss, Bishop witnessed the Challenger strike a utility pole and burst into flames. Bishop immediately exited his vehicle and ran to assist the female driver of the Challenger. Bishop was assisted by Josh Abbott, an off-duty Chelmsford, Mass., Firefighter who was passing by. The two worked quickly to free the woman from inside the car, which was burning and filling with smoke.
They successfully removed her from the car shortly before it exploded and became fully engulfed.
The woman was subsequently transported via ambulance to an area hospital with serious injuries. She was last reported to be in stable condition.
“The heroic actions by Firefighters Bishop and Abbott no doubt saved this person’s life,” Chief Warren said. “This incident showcases the commitment all firefighters and first responders make to come to the aid of those in need, no matter what, and I want to thank them both for their quick and selfless actions.”
